Reuse Your Carved Pumpkins

PrintFriendly and PDF

Okay…maybe a strange title, but don’t throw them out!  You can acutally “re-use” the pumpkins that you carved out for the main ingrediant in Pumpkin Bread/ Muffins.  Yes…it really isn’t that hard and there are two ways to do it.

Though right now, I am actually doing one of the ways right now (my sister’s way), while taking pictures and will give a shout out with how I do it with very minimal time, but a lot of rewards in the end.

Just keep your pumpkin in a cool place and you can even cover it or put it in a slightly open plastic bag to keep it moist.

For those that make Pumkin Bread or Muffins, post your recipe.

since I put mine outside and I know the mice and squirrels have already visited, I think I’ll pass. ;-)

even with the mold all over where you have the face cut out?

Well…I wouldn’t use it either if there was mold on the pumpkin….but if you can get one that isn’t…this works.

DO NOT REUSE IF you carved it and put it outside. It is unsanitary and even though you bake it, it can still carry bad things.

I make my own pumpkin everything every year with pie pumpkins. Quickest way is to gut and cut the pumpkin into small squares and triangles then put into a microwave safe dish and fill it half-way up with water. I also have food safe/grade plastic wrap that does not give off toxins, so I put that over the top. If you do not have this, try to use a dish with a lid.

Microwave for about 8-10 minutes, or until you can put a fork through the rind. Pull out and let cool for a minute. Remove the rind from the pumpkin and place the “meat” into a blender or food processor. Once you have a good amount, I add some brown sugar, a little honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a dash of ground clove. Voila! Your very own pumpkin puree.

I never put my carved pumpkins outside. They are always sitting on my window sill and then they go above my garage until I can “cook” them.

Thanks for the way that you do it. I have always “boiled mine” yet my sister has always baked hers.
